Advances in Phytochemical Research: Sustainable Utilization of Medicinal Plants for Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Applications

Abstract
Medicinal plants are invaluable sources of bioactive phytochemicals with great therapeutic potential for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical uses. The chapter provides a detailed description of the classification of phytochemicals, their biosynthesis, biological activities, and sustainable utilization strategies for the medicinal plant resources. It covers the most up-to-date cultivation methods, biodiversity protection, quality assurance, and the advanced extraction and characterization techniques that enable the identification and standardization of plant-derived compounds. The role of phytochemicals in drug discovery, the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals, and in the prevention of diseases with particular emphasis on anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and antidiabetic properties of phytochemicals, is highlighted. Furthermore, the chapter emphasizes the use of artificial intelligence, multi-omics technologies, molecular docking, systems biology, and nanotechnology to progress the phytochemical study, as well as precision phytomedicine. Some subjects cover challenges with the current standardization, regulatory compliance, clinical validation, and sustainable resource management. Finally, the integration of traditional medicine and modern scientific knowledge is a great opportunity to develop safe, effective, and scientifically supported pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals from plant-based sources to achieve sustainable development.
