The Formation of the Qur’anic Text: A Modern Critical Perspective

Abstract

This research addresses the question of intertextuality between the Torah–Gospel text and the Qur’anic text. It presents the views of the proponents of the modernist reading, followed by the views of their critics, who hold that the resemblance found between the two texts confirms the unity of their source, and that the Qur’anic text worked to amend and to transcend the corrupted text found in the Torah–Gospel text. The artistic and cognitive dimension of the Qur’anic text likewise becomes apparent through this discussion. Both trends relied on modern linguistic studies.
