Abstract

Several treatment options have been sought to improve the blood indices against hepatocellular carcinoma cases. Despite this treatments, patient continue to suffer from several side effects. The alternative therapeutic agent in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma is imperative. The plant-derived anti-carcinoma are widely accepted and generally perceived as safe.  The ethanol extract of Zingber officinale Rosce and Capsicum annuum Linn at doses 200 and 400mg/kg were investigated for anti -hepatocellular carcinoma activities on blood and histopathological indices of rats induced with 300mg/kg thioacetamide. Forty albino rats were divided into 4 groups of 10 rats each and the following treatments were given; Group 1) received feed and water only. 2) received thioacetamide (300mg/kg) + 200mg/kg of  extracts. 3) received thioacetamide (300mg/kg) + 400mg/kg extracts. 4)  received thioacetamide (300mg/kg) only. Treatment was stopped after 28days.  Blood samples were taken for both hematology and biochemical examinations and liver tissue for histopathology. Results: The result showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in HGB, RBC, MCV, MCH and MCHC levels following administration of thioacetamide to the TC group and a relative significant increase (p<0.05) in 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg group. There was also a significant increase (p<0.05) in ALP, ALT, urea and creatinine levels following administration of thioacetamide (TC) when compared to NC group. .  The synergistic use of the extracts and essential oil of these plants on hepatocellular induced rats showed an impressive recovery rate both in blood parameters and liver histopathology.
