From Kitchen to Clinic: Translational Evidence for Functional Foods in Chronic Disease Management

Abstract

Functional foods have gained attention as effective dietary strategies for preventing and managing chronic illnesses due to their abundance of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, dietary fibers, probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids, and bioactive peptides. Increasing scientific research indicates that these elements provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and metabolic regulatory benefits, which help in lowering the risk and progression of significant chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and gastrointestinal diseases. This review delves into the evolution of functional foods from traditional dietary practices in kitchens to their application in evidence-based clinical settings. It emphasizes the molecular mechanisms that contribute to their health benefits and critically assesses findings from both preclinical and clinical studies that support their therapeutic potential.
Additionally, the review addresses major obstacles to clinical translation, such as variations in bioactive composition, limited bioavailability, lack of standardization, regulatory inconsistencies, and the necessity for large-scale randomized clinical trials. The review also explores emerging advancements in precision nutrition, gut microbiome research, multi-omics technologies, artificial intelligence, and digital health as transformative methods for enhancing functional food interventions and facilitating personalized dietary strategies. By combining mechanistic insights with clinical evidence and future technological advancements, this review offers a comprehensive view of the role of functional foods in managing chronic diseases and identifies research priorities essential for their integration into routine healthcare and public health nutrition.
