Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Boswellia serrata Resin Fractions in Experimental Arthritis

Abstract

Background: Through fraction-guided analysis, it is possible to determine a reproducible resin preparation that has a symptomatic and tissue-level response. Objective: To evaluate boswellic-acid-rich resin fraction in comparison with vehicle control and diclofenac reference treatment using a controlled animal experiment. Methods: 48 experimental units or participants that involved adult Wistar rats with complete Freund adjuvant arthritis were contained in the draft protocol. The 21 days of intervention/testing. The main outcome was paw edema, and secondary measurements of mechanical pain threshold, arthritis score, serum TNF-a, histologic synovitis score. Conventional laboratory, clinical, or food-analysis methods were used and between-condition effects were analyzed using two-sided tests at α=0.05. Results: High-dose boswellic-acid-rich fraction reduced paw edema from 1.62 ± 0.22 mL in arthritis controls to 0.67 ± 0.15 mL and increased mechanical pain threshold from 34 ± 6 g to 63 ± 8 g (both p<0.001). The identical fraction elevated TNF-a by half and enhanced the compound histologic score of 9.9 ± 1.1 to 3.6 ± 0.9which was nearly equivalent to diclofenac reference response.
There was internal consistency between the direction and magnitude of the findings of the dummy between the primary and the secondary endpoints and the tolerability or assay-quality criteria was also acceptable. Conclusion: The given example data indicate that boswellic-acid-rich resin fraction might lead to a significant change in paw edema via the 5-lipoxygenase modulation and the drop in pro-inflammatory cytokine signaling. These results are meant purely as a full-manuscript-development illustration and would need substitution with ethically produced independently-validated observations prior to submission to science.
