Antihypertensive Effects of Beetroot and Amla Functional Drink in Prehypertensive Adults

Abstract

Background: A complementary food-based formulation may target vascular tone through convergent mechanisms.
Objective: To evaluate daily beetroot-amla functional drink standardized for nitrate and polyphenols in comparison with nitrate- and polyphenol-low placebo drink using a randomized controlled trial.
Methods: The draft protocol included 96 experimental units or participants involving adults with untreated elevated blood pressure. The intervention was administered or tested for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was 24-hour systolic blood pressure, with additional assessment of 24-hour diastolic blood pressure, flow-mediated dilation, plasma nitrate/nitrite, oxidative stress index. Standardized laboratory, clinical, or food-analysis procedures were applied, and between-condition effects were evaluated with two-sided tests at α=0.05.
Results: The beetroot-amla drink reduced 24-hour systolic blood pressure by 7.7 ± 5.4 mmHg compared with 1.9 ± 4.8 mmHg after placebo (p<0.001). Flow-mediated dilation improved by 1.8 percentage points and plasma nitrate/nitrite increased 2.3-fold, with no clinically significant hypotension. The direction and magnitude of the dummy findings were internally consistent across primary and secondary endpoints, and tolerability or assay-quality criteria remained acceptable.
Conclusion: The example dataset suggests that daily beetroot-amla functional drink standardized for nitrate and polyphenols could produce a meaningful improvement in 24-hour systolic blood pressure through nitrate-derived nitric oxide combined with amla polyphenol-mediated protection of endothelial redox signaling. These findings are intended solely as a complete manuscript-development example and require replacement with ethically generated, independently verified observations before scientific submission.
