The Impact of Healthcare Management Strategies on the Quality and Efficiency of Healthcare Services A Critical Review and the PRISM Framework for High-Value Healthcare Organizations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Health systems worldwide face rising demand, escalating costs, workforce shortages, and growing public expectations for safe, timely, and person-centered care. Clinical knowledge alone cannot close these gaps; the way healthcare organizations are led, structured, resourced, and measured is increasingly recognized as a decisive determinant of performance.
Objective: This paper examines how core healthcare management strategies, including strategic and performance management, leadership and culture, human resource management, quality improvement methodologies, financial and resource management, digital transformation, and patient safety governance, influence the quality and efficiency of healthcare services, with specific attention to the Saudi Arabian context.
Methods: A structured narrative review of peer-reviewed literature, international reports, and policy documents was conducted and interpreted through Donabedian’s structure–process–outcome model, the Institute of Medicine quality domains, the Quadruple Aim, and value-based healthcare theory.
Findings: Evidence consistently links structured management practices to better clinical outcomes, lower mortality, higher patient satisfaction, and improved resource utilization. Lean and continuous improvement approaches reduce waste and waiting times; effective leadership and positive organizational culture are associated with safer care; adequate staffing and workforce wellbeing improve both quality and productivity; and health information systems enable measurement-driven management. Quality and efficiency are frequently complementary rather than competing goals when waste reduction, not rationing, is the focus.
Conclusion: Management is a clinical intervention in its own right. The proposed PRISM framework integrates people, resources, integration, standards, and measurement into a coherent model to help Saudi healthcare organizations deliver higher value in line with Vision 2030.
